Dr. Ken Olson and Jeff Worrell discuss the medical profession turf battles that are taking place over manipulation. Chiropractors and Physical Therapists both are trained in the technique, but the two groups have very different views on who “should” practice manipulation. Dr. Olson gives sage advice to new therapists as well as old ones about how to protect the PT Scope of Practice for the future. Don’t rely on someone else to communicate to those in control of your future, the growing body of evidence that supports the value and expertise of the Physical Therapist in the total continuum of care.

Part 2 of our discussion with Healthcare Consultant Fran Fowler centered around how Physical Therapists can capitalize on the new Pay For Performance standards that will go into effect. Doctors are required to send patients for a gait and balance evaluation to an outpatient facility if the patient answers in the affirmative to specific questions. Physical Therapists would be wise to start marketing themselves now as having the ability to perform such an evaluation.
She believes Pay For Performance is going to become more common in rehabilitation as CMS pushes the standard of proving functional gains. The other insurers tend to follow CMS thus another way to control the escalating costs of healthcare for the insurance industry. She also raises the question of how to achieve functional gains in the new outpatient settings that are popping up that do not have gym space. Join Jeff Worrell and Fran Fowler for an informative conversation about what 2009 has in store for all of us.

With over 25 years of experience consulting in the Healthcare Industry, Fran Fowler is well versed about the trends affecting physical therapy. In this 2 part series, Ms. Fowler looks into her crystal ball and shares her predictions for 2009. All areas of Physical Therapy from private practice, skilled care centers to home health agencies have significant opportunties that just need to be recognized.
Fran lays out the changes at HHS and why Tom Dashle as Director is good for Physical Therapy. Control of
the healthcare dollar is going to become a priority and Democrats tend to be friendlier to healthcare than Republicans as a general rule. She believes a trend to keep chronic diseases within the community and out of acute care using rehabiliation services will result in more dollars flowing into rehab. She uses balance problems and how Physicians now have to respond to these patients as an example of why outpatient PT is going to explode.
Join Jeff Worrell and Fran Fowler for a real world glimpse into the future and how to make sure you benefit in 2009.
