Physical Therapy Predictions for 2012

Wonder what trends may impact your clinic in 2012? Fran Fowler, health care expert and President of Fowler Healthcare Affiliates, Inc., once again shares her health care predictions with PT Talker.  In today’s podcast discover some industry changes you should be aware of for continued success in 2012 and beyond.

Fowler continues to see cost control as the number one issue facing physical therapy and the health care industry. In an effort to contain costs, she believes health care reform will rely upon Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs).  ACOs credentials are currently underway with a few organizations.  Even if the political climate changes Fowler doesn’t believe it will impact the movement toward ACOs.

Other continuing health care trends include mergers among health care providers. She sees this as one of the first stepping stones for building ACOs as providers look to contain costs and expand their service offerings.  Fowler also advises physical therapists to pay attention to the physician fee schedule and to plan for bundled payments.

I have to say, when I hear things like this it makes me even happier to be outside the insurance/medicare systems, low overhead, and tons of time with every patient. It’s gonna be tough for small private practices to survive in the future if they’re doing mostly insurance/medicare.
