Who Can Physical Therapists Legally Work For?

physical therapy employee relationshipsUnder the California Moscone-Knox Professional Corporations Act, physical therapists are not allowed to work for medical, podiatric, chiropractic and other health corporations. Physical therapists working as employees of medical corporations could face discipline by the Physical Therapy Board of California. Last November, the State of California Legislative Counsel determined the only professional corporation physical therapists can legally be employed by is those owned by physical therapists.   A current proposed bill “AB 873” is trying to change this.  Paul Gaspar, PT, DPT, Owner of Gaspar Doctors of Physical Therapy and Director of the California Physical Therapy Association recently discussed physical therapy employment relationships with PT Talker.

The California Physical Therapy Association is the largest voice for the physical therapy profession in the state of California and supports the Moscone-Knox Act.  The APTA and California APTA Chapter have opposed the referral-for-profit model and believe this type of practice costs patient’s more for care and infringes upon the autonomy of the profession.
